The Mona Lisa (Italian: Gioconda, French: Joconde) is a half-length portrait painting by the Italian artist Leonardo da Vinci.
It is considered an archetypal masterpiece of the Italian Renaissance and has been called “the most famous, most visited, most written about, most talked about and most parodied work of art in the world”.
The painting provably depicts the Italian noblewoman Lisa del Giocondo. It is painted in oil on a white poplar panel from Lombardy. Leonardo never gave the painting to the Giocondo family and it is thought that he later gave it to his favourite apprentice Salaì. It is thought to have been painted between 1503 and 1506, but Leonardo may have continued to work on it until 1517. It was acquired by King Francis I of France and is now owned by the French Republic. It has been on permanent display in the Louvre in Paris since 1797.
The painting’s worldwide fame and popularity can be traced back to its theft in 1911 by Vincenzo Peruggia, who justified his act with Italian patriotism – believing that the painting should belong to Italy. The theft and subsequent recovery in 1914 generated unprecedented publicity for an art theft and led to many cultural representations such as the 1915 Mona Lisa opera, two films from the early 1930s (The Theft of the Mona Lisa and Arsène Lupin) and the song Mona Lisa recorded by Nat King Cole – one of the most successful songs of the 1950s.
The Mona Lisa is one of the most valuable paintings in the world. It holds the Guinness World Record for the highest known insured value of a painting in history, which was US$100 million in 1962 and stands at US$1 billion in 2023.
